DAVIS, Hiram

HIRAM DAVIS was born August 24th, 1812, in Cussewago township, and is the son of James Davis. He lived at home, working on the farm, and going to school, attending also the Kingsville academy, until the breaking out of the War of the Rebellion. In 1860 he enlisted for three months in the Eighty-third regiment, and served his time. In 1862 he enlisted for nine months in Company B., 137th regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers, as first lieutenant, and served his time; during which he was promoted to a captaincy, and was discharged May, 1863. Among the leading engagements in which he participated, were Crampton Gap, Antietam, and South Mountain. Coming home, he was appointed Quartermaster for the West Virginia department, and remained in that post two years. Then he returned home and settled on his present place and took charge of the grist and saw mills, which were built by his mother's grandfather. Mr. Davis was candidate for County Treasurer on the Democratic and Liberal ticket, and again was Democratic candidate for the same office. Among the township offices filled by Mr. Davis is that of School Director. He was married February 27th, 1866, to Miss Rhoda, daughter of Daniel Stebbins.
