Sam Gowdy and wife, of Kansas, called on their friends here last week.

The parents of the deceased were among the pioneers of Summit township. His father and Mr. Baltzer Gehr, Crawford county's centenarian, were brothers. He was born, lived and died on the land that his father selected for a house. He was converted in 1833, under the labors of Rev. J. Sybert. He gave his heart to God and his name to the Evangelical church and for 54 years he was an active and honored member of Gehrton society and a zealous and devoted follower of the Saviour.
From the Linesville Herald, Wednesday, May 11, 1887:
Dicksonburg (Special Correspondence to the Herald)
The strange fatality that has taken five from the families connected with Eli Allen in the past two weeks seems almost incredible, when one remembers that only two of the five died in the same house. His wife, Mrs. Ruby Allen, died April 26th as has been before stated. May 2nd they received a telegram announcing the death of his eldest daughter, Mrs. Charles Southard, near Kelloggsville, Ohio. May 6th Mrs. Robert Sloan, his fourth daughter, living in the same house with him, died. May 7th Mrs. Alex McGuire, his third daughter, living in Summit township died, and on the evening of the same day the little son of Mrs. Sam Crickmer, his only remaining and youngest daughter, was taken with spasms and died in a short time. Measles was the cause of all their deaths. Mrs. Crickmer had measles a few years ago at her home in Akron, Ohio, and barely escaped with her life. Mr. Allen was the father of five daughters, the second having died a number of years ago. He is in very feeble health, his family having been called home some weeks ago to see him die.
Three of Robert Sloan's seven children have recovered from the measles, the other four are still in critical condition.
Mrs. Fording has gone to visit friends in Ohio.
The stave mill is putting in good time, and the yard is full of staves.
Miss Nervie Lowman's school has been postponed two weeks on account of the prevalence of the measles.
