Jamestown: Mary Etta Bates, 82, widow of Claude R. Bates, died Monday in Quinby Nursing Home in Fowler, after an extended illness. Born in Salem Township on November 17, 1883, daughter of Richard S. and Angela Rhoades Osborne, her husband died in 1951. Mrs. Bates was the oldest living member of State Line Methodist Church and the WSCS. Surviving are a son, Bartley L of Orwell; two daughters: Alice (Mrs. Raymond S. Hogue) of Burghill and Evelyn (Mrs. Arthur Hogue) of Albuquerque, NM; two grandsons; two half-sisters: Mrs. Goldie Smith and Mrs. Addie Seeley, both of Greenville; and a half-brother, Ralph Osborne, of Greenville. {Services will be held Thursday at James Baird Funeral Home with Rev Russell Babcock officiating. Burial in State Line Cemetery.} [Sharon Herald, July 6, 1965]
