Retired Farmer: Claude Royal Bates, 70, died in Trumbull Memorial Hospital yesterday of a heart condition. Mr. Bates had been a patient at the hospital since July 4. He was born in Mercer County on November 17, 1880, son of Henry Leslie and Elizabeth Brown Bates. On May 17, 1904, he married Mary Osborne of North Salem. He had been a member of State Line Methodist Church for 50 years. Surviving are his wife; two daughters: Mrs. Alice Hogue of Sharon and Mrs. Evelyn Hogue of Albuqueque, NM; a son, Bartley L. Bates of State Line; a brother, Merle Bates of Jamestown; and two grandchildren. {Services will be held Thursday at McCurdy Funeral Home. Burial in State Line Cemetery.} [Sharon Herald, July 10, 1951]
