DEARBORN, Ned Harland - Dr.

August 1. 1942 - published "FORMER PRESIDENT OF SAFETY COUNCIL DIES AT TITUSVILLE." Dr. Ned Harland Dearborn 69, president of the National Safety Council from 1944 to 1959, and a native of Crawford County, died Wednesday in Titusville Hospital after a long illness.
He was born near Conneautville and taught school in that community for many years while a student at Edinboro State College and Columbia University where he received master's and Ph.D. degrees. Grove City College, where he studied for one year granted him an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1954.
Since his retirement four years ago, Dr. and Mrs. Dearborn had lived in Titusville. He joined a distinguished company of state leaders when, in 1958, he was awarded the Pennsylvania meritorius Medal from Gov. George M. Leader. He had been named a Pennsylvania Ambassador in 1951.
Before becoming executive vice president of the Safety Council in 1942, he was dean of the division of general education at New York University. He was New York state director of teaching education for several years.
In 1959 he undertook the time consuming job of president of the Centennial Corp., of Titusville which organized a mammoth observance of the golden anniversary of the discovery of oil in that region. He was county chairman of the 1960 Christmans Seal campaign of the Crawford County Tuberculosis and Health Society.
Named by Lawrence: Last November he was appointed by Governor David L. Lawrence to a Regional Air Pollution Assn. for region II which includes Crawford County.
During his years of service as head of the NSC he was a member of the coordinating committees of the President's Highway Safety Conference, the President's conference on Fire Prevention and the President's Industrial Safety Conference. During his tenure he earned the reputation of helping to make the nation safety conscious and was credited with saving thousands of lives by his furthering of safety education.
Dr. Dearborn was born June 2, 1893, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Dearborn. He was a member of several Masonic organizations, including Zem Zem Temple at Erie and the Col Drake Shrine Club of Titusville; and of the Titusville Elks Lodge and Rotary Club. He was chairman of Titusville Redevelopment Committee and president of Col Drake Council, Boy Scouts of America. He recently received a Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts.
He is survived by his widow the former Glennie M. Grant, and a grandson, Ned W. Dearborn of Bronxville, NY. His only child, Gayle, a B-17 navigator was killed in World War II.
Friends may call today and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the E.A. Peterson Funderal Home, Titusville, where service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. The Rev. Richard Shannon Graham, pastor of Titusville First Presbyterian Church of which Dr. Dearborn was a member, wilk officiate. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Titusville. The family has requested that flowers be omitted.
